Ventures West Expands Biotech Investment Team

  • Dr. Maha Katabi joins Ventures West as Vice President

Toronto, ON, August 10, 2004 - Ventures West, one of Canada’s largest privately owned venture capital companies, has announced that Dr. Maha Katabi has joined the firm as Vice President. Dr. Katabi will focus on deal generation and portfolio management in the Biotech sector, particularly for early stage companies in Ontario and Quebec.  She will split her time between the Ventures West Toronto office and the newly established office in Montreal.

"Her appointment, and the establishment of an office in Montreal, highlights our continued commitment to finding, funding and developing world class biotech companies across Canada."

Prior to joining Ventures West, Dr. Katabi was Vice President Business Development of Chronogen Inc., a drug discovery company developing human therapeutics to treat age-dependent diseases.  Prior to joining Chronogen, she was responsible for managing investments in the life sciences field with T2C2/Bio, a prominent Quebec biotechnology venture fund.  While at T2C2/Bio, she worked closely with Chronogen as well as several other portfolio companies to develop their technologies and position them for commercialization. Dr. Katabi holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from McGill University.

The addition of Dr. Katabi rounds out the Ventures West’s Biotech team with representation in both east and west metropolitan centres.  The team includes Senior Vice President Nancy Harrison, Associate Chris Laird, Investment Manager Jennifer Hamilton and Entrepreneurs in Residence Dr. Michael Albin and Barry Allen.
